I have to use my friend as my frame of reference; I have no tattoos there myself (yet), but my best friend has a small tattoo several inches below her belly button (pretty much just above the lower hair line). She went her entire pregnancy without it stretching...but ended up with a c-section where the doctor cut RIGHT through the middle of it and didn't quite stitch it up the same. I'm going to draw a cover-up for it; now that she's done having kids, she wants to fix it.

As for myself, my sides are slightly covered by my backpiece (and I'm currently pregnant :D) but I haven't gained enough weight in my sides to affect where I'm tattooed. From what I know, everyone carries differently. My friend mentioned above carried her baby weight everywhere. I'm all belly and I only gained weight in my butt (people don't realize I'm pregnant if they're looking at me from behind).

If it was me (and I'm actually a tattoo apprentice on hiatus, if it means anything), I would wait until you have kids before getting tattooed there. It's hard to tell where you will carry (high, low, in the middle) and you might end up with stretch marks or you might not. If you end up with stretch marks you might want to modify your tattoo to try and cover the stretch marks...you never know.

Sorry for the novel. Hope this helps a little.
